You all took careful  vocabulary notes. Let&#8217;s discuss terms he uses and your vocabulary  journals.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%; height: 2px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large;\">Suggested writing project<\/span> &#8212; the power of words: Put into words a complaint, diatribe or  persuasive work. Express an opinion that you feel strongly about. We  will discuss projects submitted this week on his theme.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s go over some of the submitted work.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%; height: 2px;\" \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aos.abacus-es.com\/mod\/resource\/view.php?id=364\">early version of the classic Strunk&#8217;s Elements of Style<\/a> has been put in our classroom. Let&#8217;s review some of the elements. It  has been revised many times since, but this one is in public domain. B. White\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E._B._White\">E. B. White<\/a>, is a <a title=\"Linguistic prescription\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linguistic_prescription\">prescriptive<\/a> <a title=\"American English\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_English\">American English <\/a><a title=\"Writing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Writing\">writing<\/a> <a title=\"Style guide\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Style_guide\">style guide<\/a> comprising eight &#8220;elementary rules of usage,&#8221; ten &#8220;elementary  principles of composition,&#8221; \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a few matters of form,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a list of  forty-nine &#8220;words and expressions commonly misused,&#8221; and a list of  fifty-seven &#8220;words often misspelled.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%; height: 2px;\" \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"dangling participle\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/17\/22145846_b5a47ad292.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"dangling participle\" hspace=\"3\" vspace=\"3\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Dangling participles<\/span><br \/>\nIt would seem fairly obvious, but one of the most important elements of  writing is to say what you actually mean. It&#8217;s very easy to say  something else without realizing it. Let&#8217;s explore this problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A  pronoun must refer to a single noun, not a phrase or a collection of  oddments and especially may not refer to nothing at all. Check your work  to determine the reference for pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>Wrong:<\/p>\n<p><em>The accountant&#8217;s wheelbarrow was full of eels, which irritated the fastidious spectator.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nThe <em>which<\/em> does not refer to a specific noun. Are the eels irritating the professor, or is it the presence of the wheelbarrow?<\/p>\n<p>Better:<\/p>\n<p><em>The presence of eels in the accountant&#8217;s wheelbarrow irritated the fastidious spectator.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nModifying phrases must modify something appropriate. &#8220;Misplaced&#8221; modifiers dangle about untidily.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples of ambiguous anaphoric references and dangling participles.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>While climbing Mt.  Kilimanjaro, which is quite steep up to the very top and then slopes  away rather sharply, Rupert&#8217;s hair dryer required constant adjustment. <\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em> <\/em><br \/>\n(Who is climbing the mountain? The hair drier?)<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>Ducking under a flock  of pestilent soiled budgies, the handlebars struck the sandwich in my  pocket doing irreparable harm to the avocado. <\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em> <\/em><br \/>\n(Who or what is ducking?)<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>To Rupert&#8217;s surprise, he was comfortably able to drive the tractor wearing swim fins and goggles. <\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em> <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">(Is the tractor wearing swim fins and goggles?)<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%; height: 2px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Homework:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/p>\n<p>Watch the rest of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aos.abacus-es.com\/mod\/resource\/view.php?id=312\">Unacknowledged Legislation<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A vocabulary story, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aos.abacus-es.com\/mod\/resource\/view.php?id=366\">The Ministry of Erroneous Assumptions<\/a>, has been added to our class.
